5 Tips to help keep your cat cool during a summer heat wave.

Summertime. We all look forward to cool breezes, flowers in bloom staycations or vacations. The hot weather arrives and we embrace shorts and t-shirt weather!

If you live in an apartment building or a duplex/triplex, you may need to be creative on how to cool down your space. Portable A/C window units are great for a living room space for a smaller dwelling, but getting that cool air circulated could be a problem.

If you are a pet owner there are a couple of more things to consider; like how you can keep your pet cool during those blistering days of heat and humidity? Heat stroke is real and can come on slowly. Remember, your pet has fur. That adds to body temperature. So what can you do to avoid your pet over heating?

-Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl. That way your pet always has a cool drink to help them stay hydrated. This is especially true for cats! If you are going away during the summer, make sure your pet has at least two bowls of fresh water!

Cats are unique in the way that they can only go without water for up to 72 hours before their organs start shutting down. If you have a pet sitter coming in once every couple of days, make sure they have plenty of water!

-Invest in a cooling pad for pets. These are a great was for a pet to cool off by laying on the matt. They are made of a cooling gel technology that work wonderfully on hot summer days!

-Hydration is super important, consider adding wet food mixed with a teaspoon of water to their diet if you generally only feed them dry food.

-Fans are also a good way to provide relief. Consider a small fan for air circulation.

-Pet water fountains are also helpful as they provide a continuous stream of fresh cool water to drink from.

In packing up to go on a holiday don’t forget to make sure you have these things in place. Your pet’s safety is important for your peace of mind while you are away enjoying your holiday.
