What is summer solstice?
Summer solstice occurs at the moment the earth’s tilt towards the sun is at a maximum. Therefore on the day of summer solstice-June 21st, the sun appears at its highest elevation with a noontime position that changes very little for several days before and after. It is the longest day of the year with the most hours of sun light and the least amount of hours of night.
The significance from a mindfulness point of view? According to some cultures it is a time for renewal, abundance and strength. Or celebrating nature’s energy, light and vitality. And what better way to celebrate than going on a picnic with your pet companion?
Make a plan to go for a hike in a nearby conservation area or a visit to a local beach where you can hopefully find a spot under a shady tree! Don’t forget to pack a light lunch for the two of you and a comfy blanket to sit on when you are ready to stop and appreciate all that nature’s surroundings has to offer.
So what to bring on your picnic for two? Well, you can start with the basics; a nap-sack that you can place your collapsible water bowls in, as you want to make sure you have plenty of fresh water for your dog. Non-BPA plastic water bottles filled with filtered water. Snacks such as fresh veggies like carrots or green beans or fruit ( fresh strawberries or apple slices), that both you and your dogs can share. High protein energy balls (recipe to follow), and most importantly your intention to appreciate the day! Start out early if the weather is calling for hot temperatures and stay well hydrated. Don’t forget the sunscreen and maybe even consider a cooling vest for your dog. What is a cooling vest? Well it is a vest made of a material with built in evaporative cooling technology that draws heat away from your dog when soaked in cool water. Helping to keep your pooch cool for hours!
